Das Drumset ist ein typisches Soloinstrument. Es treibt die Band an, schiebt sie nach vorne, gibt den Takt vor, ist der Maschinenraum. Es muss stabil sein, damit die anderen ins Schwitzen geraten. Ein Ensemble aus Drumsets gibt es nicht.

Mein Stück für Drumset-Ensemble setzt bei folgenden Fragen an:

Kommunikation: Wie kann das Verhältnis von Führen und Geführtwerden in einer Gruppe aus Alphatier-Instrumenten überhaupt funktionieren, insbesondere, wenn die Musik so laut und schnell wird, dass die Spielenden sich untereinander kaum noch hören?

Raum: Wie kann man diese lauten und extrem schnellen Bewegungen in den Raum verteilen, sodass die Hörenden das Gefühl haben, sie säßen inmitten eines einzigen riesigen Drumsets, das von einer einzigen Person mit zwanzig Händen bedient wird?

Instrumente: Der Aufbau eines Drumsets ist standardisiert, aber die Größen der Instrumente unterscheiden sich ganz erheblich. Das hängt von den Vorlieben und Persönlichkeiten der Spieler:innen ab. Wenn zehn Kickdrums im Spiel sind, spielen daher die Tonhöhen eine entscheidende Rolle. Wie klingt eine Melodie für Snaredrums?

Form: Das Stück muss lang sein, damit sich die Möglichkeiten dieses Versuchsaufbaus entfalten können. Es ist nicht schwer, sich vorzustellen, dass ein solches Stück wild und lustvoll sein kann. Aber die Erfindung einer mindestens einstündigen Form aus den Spielgesten und der körperlichen Energie wird das Schwerste sein. Traditionelle Drumset-Musik wird ja eigentlich improvisiert. Aber mit zehn Drumsets ist das nicht möglich. Es braucht einen Komponisten.

The drum set is a typical solo instrument. It drives the band, pushes it forward, sets the beat, is the engine room. It has to be solid so that the others start to sweat. There is no such thing as an ensemble of drum sets.

My piece for drum set ensemble deals with the following questions:

Communication: How can the relationship between leading and being led work in a group of alpha instruments, especially when the music gets so loud and fast that the players can hardly hear each other?

Space: How can you distribute these loud and extremely fast movements into the room so that the listeners have the feeling that they are sitting in the middle of a single huge drum set operated by a single person with twenty hands?

Instruments: The structure of a drum set is standardized, but the sizes of the instruments vary considerably. This depends on the preferences and personalities of the players. When ten kick drums are involved, the pitches therefore play a crucial role. How does a melody for snare drums sound?

Form: The piece must be long enough so that the possibilities of this experimental set-up can unfold. It is not difficult to imagine that such a piece can be wild and full of relish. But inventing a form that lasts at least an hour, utilizing such playing gestures and physical energy, will be the hardest part. Traditional drum set music is actually improvised. But that's not possible with ten drum sets. It needs a composer.
